Common Sewer System Problems

Most sewer problems start with a clogged drain. Soap scum, grease, and waste can build up in your household pipes, while sediment, dirt, and other sludge collect in the pipes leading to the main sewer lines. Common signs of sewer problems include:

Cracks

Cracked sewer pipes are smelly, attract insects and rodents, and cause mold and mildew growth. Improper installation, freeze/thaw cycles, age, and high water pressure can also contribute to cracks.

Corrosion

While the problem may seem sudden, sewer pipe corrosion happens over time. Erosion can occur from corrosive liquids like those in store-bought cleaning solutions, and pitting or "pinhole leaks" can form in copper lines.

Damage

Tree roots are constantly growing, especially when looking for water. Keeping trees hydrated and planting them away from your sewer lines can help prevent damage. Storms can also cause significant damage to sewer lines, especially downed trees.
